NEF Partnership with the inaugural Ideas Festival/Emory brings renowned authors to interact with Newton County students.

The Ideas Festival/Emory (IF Emory) is a new free community event hosted by the Oxford Campus of Emory University.  Taking place September 20-22, the weekend will feature some of the most impactful and interesting scientists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, and creators of our time.

An exciting collaboration between Newton Education Foundation, Newton County Schools and IF Emory will bring two children’s authors to the Newton elementary schools that are part of a literary pilot providing structured literacy training.

Molly Webster, an award-winning journalist and correspondent at WNYC’s podcast RadioLab,  has written a space-based story about the power of friendship and memory called Little Black Hole. “With a quirky, playful story and sweet and silly art, this heartwarming story reminds us all that, no matter how lonely or anxious we might get, friendship is never more than a quick thought—and glow—away. And with back matter that gives readers information about the real science of black holes, this is a perfect book for all of the young space and science fans out there!” (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/)

Malcom Mitchell, a Super Bowl champion and literacy ambassador will share his book,  My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World.  The book reinforces the idea that there is a just right book for even the most reluctant readers.  Malcolm’s inspiring personal story includes being one of the top 10 receivers of all time at The University of Georgia, winning a Superbowl with the Patriots and starting the Share the Magic Foundation. The Foundation has a mission of inspiring a love of reading in young people by giving books to students in under-resourced communities. Since its founding, the Foundation has placed books in the hands of more than 65,000 young readers and provided Read with Malcolm Literacy programing to over 300,000 students

NEF Executive Director Gail Rothman shared, “we are so excited about this partnership that allows young readers to meet established authors.  Thanks to our generous donors, we will be covering the cost for students to take home a copy of the author’s book. Author visits are an incredible opportunity to inspire a love of books and build a strong culture of literacy across our community”.
