Malcom Mitchell, a Super Bowl champion and literacy ambassador visited students at East Newton Elementary on September 20 to share his love of reading. A knee injury forced Mitchell to retire from the NFL but he keeps busy as a published author and director of the Share the Love Foundation which promotes reading and literacy in underserved communities.
East Newton students got this special visit through a partnership between the Ideas Festival at Emory and Newton Education Foundation. The school was chosen as a thank you for their enthusiastic participation in a pilot that trains teachers in structured literacy.
The best part? Every student got to bring home a brand new copy of Mitchell’s book My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World. The book reinforces the idea that there is a just right book for even the most reluctant readers.
The literacy pilot and the over 500 books that were purchased by the Newton Education Foundation were funded by Newton County residents who participate in the Peach Education Tax Credit Program.
