What a year it has been! A year ago a friend reached out to me and asked me if I had ever heard of the Newton Education Foundation. Although I had vaguely heard about it, I did not know much about it. This friend proceeded to tell me that she thought I would be a good fit for the foundation. And, boy has it changed me completely!
I was at a crossroads in my life as my youngest child would soon “graduate” from the only school he had ever known from Kindergarten – 8th grade. My passion for volunteerism truly was focused for years at his school. It was something that I lived and breathed. In addition, as an educator, I have always been equally as passionate about public education. So, being a “super volunteer” at my son’s school was a fantastic fit for me. But, now as he was approaching going to high school, where would I go? What would I do? Where would I fit in? We all know that our kids would rather NOT see us volunteering in their high schools! LOL! And then, boom, like divine intervention, Newton Education Foundation appeared. THIS WAS IT! This would be the perfect way to bridge my love for public schools and my passion for volunteering, especially knowing my son would be transitioning to high school soon. And, boy oh boy, what a FABULOUS ride it has been so far!
I dove in HEAD FIRST into my role as a board member for the Newton Education Foundation as the committee chairperson for a HUGE community fundraising event, bringing the Harlem Wizards to Covington to play an exhibition game against a team made up of teachers and staff from ALL 14 elementary schools! Thankfully, we were successfully able to raise money for teacher grants to help enrich the learning of our Newton County students! But, this game was a success not only in the aspect of fundraising, but even more so with bringing all corners of this amazing Newton County community together.
Although we had experienced success with the Harlem Wizards fundraiser, I still knew that I had so much more to learn about education foundations in general. I was so fortunate to be able to attend the National Association for Education Foundations (NAEF) conference this year in Knoxville, Tennessee. What an incredible experience and week that was! I learned so much about the world of education foundations and the amazing impact that they can have on the local public school system.
The NAEF conference was more than just an event—it was an energizing, idea-packed experience that will allow me to truly elevate my work. Here’s why it was worth my time – Firstly, it reignited my passion. I was able to step away from the daily grind and get inspired by keynote speakers and real success stories that reminded me why I do what I do. It also gave me a chance to learn what works. I gained actionable strategies on everything from fundraising and grants to equity and engagement—tools that I could bring back to Newton Education Foundation. I also made SO MANY meaningful connections. I was able to network with like-minded professionals who share the same mission. We got to collaborate, share ideas, and create partnerships and friendships that will last beyond the conference itself. And lastly, attending the NAEF conference as a board member of the Newton Education Foundation, I was able to grow professionally. It was an investment in my own growth as a leader—and that growth can hopefully benefit Newton Education Foundation.
In short, attending the NAEF conference gave me a chance to recharge, learn, and aspire to “level up” Newton Education Foundation’s work. I am passionate about making a difference in education, and I am grateful to be able to do it through the Newton Education Foundation.
