Students come to RISE Academy for a variety of reasons but once they get there, the school’s goal is the same: “to provide a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment that promotes self-discipline and self-confidence while offering assistance to students who are transitioning to their home school, college, or career.”

Shelsey Reed and Kelly Byrd, program facilitators at RISE Academy, wanted students to have specific activities to strengthen their reading skills. They submitted a teacher grant application for the  purchase of IPads so that students at different levels could get customized practice.

Reed and Byrd work in close collaboration with middle and high school ELA teachers in Newton County Schools to tailor interventions to effectively prepare students to return to their home schools ready to succeed.

In the application, they shared, ” our goal is to enhance student literacy skills by utilizing digital applications and technology. As a staff, we intend to help students improve their reading comprehension and reasoning skills, working toward closing the achievement gap as outlined in Dr. Bradley’s 90-day plan.”

This grant, and every teacher grant, is made possible by community donations received by NEF.  The Newton Education Foundation puts community resources to work for our kids so they can achieve academic and personal success. We do this by providing funds that help our schools remove obstacles, provide great educational opportunities that deepen learning and support teachers in meeting the learning needs of all kids.

Consider making a gift, of any amount, so that more students can have great classroom experiences that enhance learning. www.newtoneducationfoundation.org/donate
