Four recipients were recently announced for the Aspiraciones Mas Grandes Scholarship, funded by the Collins family.
Inspired by a neighbor, Rose and Travis Collins created a scholarship that provides recognition and assistance to aspiring first generation Latino college students. They called the award Aspiraciones Mas Grande — Bigger Aspirations.
This scholarship, for students graduating from Newton County Schools, is administered by the Newton Education Foundation and provides four $3,000 awards to graduating seniors.

Juliana Arteaga will be attending Georgia State University in the fall with plans to one day become a music educator. Juliana served as an ambassador for Eastside High School, was an editor for the school yearbook, and a member of The Pride of Eastside Marching Band. Juliana wants to help children learn to express themselves through music and instruments in her future.

Juliana is a hard working student who always perseveres in times of need. She’s an incredibly talented and self-motivated kid who is also looking out for the best in others. I think the world of Jules, and so do all of her peers. I cannot believe it’s already time for her to graduate and move on from us. From Juliana:
My favorite thing about Newton County is the close community. Everyone is so involved. I love being able to go to the square and see a performance because everyone always shows out. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad time at the square. It is also nice to know that you always see people you know – you can always find a friendly face.

Kianna Felix will be attending the Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall pursuing a degree in Industrial Design. An active member of her school community, Kianna has served as a captain for her high school’s cheerleading team, a president for her school’s chapter of FBLA, and will be graduating in the Top 10 of her class. Kianna’s teachers, counselors, and mentors have encouraged her to reach her fullest potential, and she hopes to join a company one day which creates educational toys for children.
Kianna is a phenomenal student whose talents shine across digital arts, engineering, and computer navigation. Her creativity and technical precision consistently set her work apart, whether she’s designing graphics, solving complex problems, or leading tech-based projects. As an active and dedicated FBLA member, Kianna demonstrates strong leadership, initiative, and a passion for innovation that inspires her peers and elevates every team she’s part of, she will go above and beyond with her future at Georgia Tech and in her future career. – Jasmine El-Jourbagy, Animation and Digital Media Teacher, Newton College & Career Academy

My favorite things about time spent in Newton County is the community that has shaped me and supported me since elementary school; all of my teachers, counselors, and mentors have always pushed me to reach my fullest potential.
Something people may not know about me is that I love to draw, paint, and make all things look pretty! I am also interested in graphic design and have 6 industry-level certifications in Adobe programs.

Wanderson Johnson has been an active member in extracurricular activities throughout his high school years, and maintained a high GPA while doing so. A member of the soccer program and Eco-Eagles at Eastside High School, Wandy was able to engage with many individuals who brought unique perspectives and support to his life. Wandy looks forward to continuing to maintain a high GPA in his college career and continue playing soccer.

Leonardo Perales will be attending Georgia State University: Perimeter College in the fall with plans to become an architect. He will graduate within the top 20% of his graduating class at Alcovy High School. Throughout his time at the Newton College and Career Academy, he enjoyed making connections with trainers and associates, which allowed Leonardo to discover his desire for his future plans.
