An NEF grant has purchased 50 new library-bound books to expand an innovative reading program at East Newton Elementary school. The program, a collaborative effort between media specialist Meghen Bassel and school resource officer, Officer Ridley, began during the 2024–2025 school year, Officer Ridley’s first year at East Newton Elementary.

Officer Ridley reads weekly with classes across the school, and students are always eager for his visits. Each of the new titles pairs with the NovelEffect app, which adds sound effects and music that bring stories to life. These interactive read-alouds have quickly become student favorites and make storytime an unforgettable experience. After his first year, Office Ridley had read so many books that the library soon found themselves in need of new titles to use with NovelEffect. This latest NEF grant made those new books possible.

The positive impact of this program can be seen every day in the high-fives, hugs, and waves students share with Officer Ridley throughout the halls. It’s a wonderful example of how reading can build connections, foster joy, and strengthen relationships within the school community.  Ms. Bassel recounted a favorite memory from soon after the program launched.  After reading to his first few classes, Officer Ridley returned to the library asking for more and more books.  When asked how the first reading session went, he responded “They were completely silent and focused on the story!  It was great!”  It was at that moment that he realized just how much students enjoy being read to.

Ms. Bassel expressed gratitude to NEF for continued support of the school.  “Thanks to their generosity, we can fund projects that truly enhance student learning—projects that might not have been possible otherwise.”

Consider making a gift, of any amount, so that more students can make meaningful connections through a shared love of books. www.newtoneducationfoundation.org/donate
