In early December Newton County STEAM Academy students in grades 6 through 8 welcomed Parrot Productions, a bird demonstration group from Norcross, Georgia.  This event was the culmination of a project titled “Research to Reality: Exploring Birds up Close” and was made possible by a grant from NEF.

The project, spearheaded by media specialist Ali Geigerman, was a true collaborative effort, involving students, teachers, and the visiting bird expert. Teachers guided students through a research journey, integrating science, social studies, and literacy. Students explored bird-related topics, analyzed information, and prepared presentations for the Science and Social Studies Fair. The highlight, however, was the live demonstration by Parrot Productions, which brought classroom research to life with real-world observations.

During the visit, every student had the opportunity to hold some of the exotic birds, making the experience both interactive and unforgettable. As one student, Audrey, exclaimed, “Wow! I’ve never done anything like this before!” The demonstration not only reinforced the students’ research but also deepened their understanding of ecosystems, adaptations, and conservation.

The event impacted 350 students, sparking curiosity and engagement with scientific inquiry. Mrs. Geigerman expressed her appreciation: “Thank you so much NEF for this amazing opportunity! Our students and staff had a great time with Parrot Productions and we are so grateful for your partnership!”

This visit from Parrot Productions exemplifies how collaborative, interdisciplinary projects can ignite curiosity and deepen understanding, leaving a lasting impression on both students and educators.
