NEF is proud to announce the successful implementation of the Indoor Hydroponics: Food for Learning project—an innovative initiative made possible through a recently awarded ChangeX grant. This project brings cutting‑edge agricultural technology directly into our schools, giving students hands‑on experience with hydroponic farming while also addressing food insecurity in our community.

At the heart of the project is the Flex Farm, a compact, high‑yield indoor hydroponic unit developed by Fork Farms. Capable of producing up to 28 pounds of fresh produce each month, the Flex Farm offers students a powerful learning tool and families a meaningful source of healthy food. In a county where many neighborhoods are considered food deserts and transportation barriers limit access to fresh produce, this project provides both education and nourishment.

Students are actively involved in every step of the process—from setting up the Flex Farm and selecting crops to monitoring growth, documenting data, and planning harvest distribution. Through this work, they are gaining a deep understanding of how hydroponics functions, how it differs from traditional agriculture, and why this technology is shaping the future of farming. Teachers have embraced the project as a dynamic way to integrate STEAM concepts into the classroom, offering real‑world applications in science, technology, and sustainability.

As the project continues, students will explore opportunities to expand their impact, including connecting with local organizations that serve seniors, individuals with disabilities, and foster families. The long‑term vision includes the possibility of selling surplus produce at local farmers markets, helping students learn entrepreneurial skills while generating funds to sustain future seed purchases.

This project represents a powerful intersection of education, innovation, and community support. By investing in hydroponic technology, we are not only enriching classroom learning but also helping ensure that fresh, healthy food is accessible to more Newton County families.

The Foundation is committed to seeking out resources like this ChangeX grant to provide meaningful learning initiatives like this one. You can support this effort by donating at www.newtoneducationfoundation.org/donate.
