Thanks to a NEF Teacher Innovation Grant, fourth‑ and fifth‑grade students at Heard‑Mixon Elementary are strumming their way into a brand‑new musical adventure. Music teacher Joshua Howard received funding to purchase 24 high‑quality Leolani ukuleles.
During the 2026 spring semester, students began learning foundational skills, from proper hand position to their first chords. Classes will continue in the 2026-2027 school year working through method materials, recording practice sessions, and even beginning simple songwriting projects. As students grow more comfortable, Mr. Howard plans to incorporate short in‑class performances and eventually feature ukulele ensembles in school concerts.
For many students, this is their first experience performing on a stringed instrument, and the accessibility of the ukulele is helping them build confidence, creativity, and expressive freedom. NEF is proud to support Heard‑Mixon’s commitment to helping young musicians discover their voice and potential through hands‑on, high‑impact learning.
