Youth Voice Matters partnered with Newton Education Foundation in 2025–26 to bring a breakthrough, youth‑led listening initiative to every middle school in Newton County. The project addressed a core challenge facing adolescents today: teens often feel unheard in decisions that shape their daily lives. As one section of the report notes, “Adults make decisions that impact the lives of teenagers but don’t engage with them to really understand their lived experience.”
To change that, NEF invested in a youth-driven model where trained high school leaders facilitated six listening sessions with 81 eighth graders across all middle schools. Supported by 10 adult allies, these near‑peer facilitators created brave, creative spaces for students to share what helps them thrive, what challenges they face, and how they believe their schools and community can improve.
Across schools, students defined “thriving” as feeling supported, safe, confident, and able to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Many emphasized mental health, meaningful relationships, and opportunities to pursue their goals.

Youth also named clear priorities: addressing bullying and peer dynamics, improving school environments and resources, expanding activities and clubs, strengthening adult–teen communication, and increasing mental‑health supports. When asked how they would invest $10,000 to improve life for Newton County youth, the top answers included more activities and opportunities, better facilities, and improved food options.
The impact was unmistakable. In post‑session surveys, 98.6% of eighth graders said their voice was invited and appreciated, and teen facilitators reported increased confidence and new leadership skills.
Youth Voice Matters and NEF will continue sharing these insights with the community, ensuring that student perspectives guide future investments, programs, and partnerships. This project marks a powerful step toward a Newton County where youth voice is not only welcomed but expected.
