At Newton County Schools’ third annual Literacy Extravaganza, thousands of students and families came together for a district-wide celebration of reading, creativity, and community. Within this larger festival, one of the standout moments was a lively, hands-on cooking demonstration led by Chef Asata Reid, MPH, MS Ed, presented through NEF’s USDA Farm‑to‑School grant in partnership with Small Bites Adventure Club.
Chef Asata brought her signature blend of humor, energy, and practical nutrition guidance, showing families how simple, fresh ingredients can support healthier eating at home. Her session aligned with the district’s farm‑to‑school goals and Small Bites Adventure Club’s mission to help children explore healthy foods through fun, bite-sized experiences. To extend the learning beyond the event, NEF distributed 200 free copies of her book How to Feed a Kid: A Parent’s Guide, giving families kid‑friendly strategies they can continue using long after the demo.
