Verda Watson, an Audio-Video Technology and Film instructor at Newton College and Career Academy (NCCA), received a 2025 Newton Education Foundation Teacher Innovation Grant to launch a student podcast program. Her project, The Sound Session: Crafting Conversations through Podcast, gave students hands-on training in scriptwriting, audio recording, editing, and production — and a platform open to students, teachers, and community members across Newton County.
The results came quickly. Two student-produced shows, Spotlight on Seniors and Putting Out Problems, were selected to air on the Georgia Public Broadcasting Student Voices Collective at GPB.org/SVC.
The students are truly enjoying the experience. They are excited about creating meaningful, engaging podcasts that give them a voice and allow them to share their perspectives.
